User Reviews:
- This is a fine piece of kit if you have a DNLA TV and want to stream lots of different file types from your PC to TV.
I tested a lot of these and this was the best and the one with the ability to play LOADS of formats...so if your TV, like mine, can play mpeg, divx,mp3 and maybe some other major formats, installing this will enable you to watch most files you can download or erm, supply to your PC. The software actually utilises a lot of freeware commandline utils like fmpeg and rtmpdump to name a couple, converting the file on the fly, sending the compatible format to your TV. the difference in quality is praactically unnoticeable.
Now the really, REALLY bad news...
I didn't think twice, I bought this software aftere trialling it.
The license is a wierd and very unfriendly system. You must buy an activation code for each device. that seems simple enough until you realise that your TV becomes TWO DEVICES if you choose to use it wirelessly and cabled with ethernet cable!
So OK then, you decide to choose one, or both, and you buy your license.
Great.
Everything was going fine, give or take the odd problem and the odd file that just refused to play ball....then one day...
Samsung TV's, for whatever reason, were given a firmware update. This is a forced thing ususally - I switched the TV on and then it told me 'Software Update' so I let it do it, then it turned off and back on. No noticeabl;e changes.
I started the WildMedia Server later and it came up saying:
TRIAL IS EXPIRED.
What??
I paid for it!!
So I contacted the author by email, explaining in detail what had happened. Providing him with the 'device code' (A code his software creates from the MAC address in each device, and in my TV)
To say he is sparing with his words would be an understatement. I got an email with a device code in it and the corresponding activation code.
When I tried to enter this, it said
ACTIVATION CODE IS INVALID.
I emailed again, enclosing screenshots of the code failing, explaining what I thought had happened with the samsung update...
I got a reply back telling me to use a new license!
I [posted on the 'support forum' where you can speak directly to Eugene, the author. He was absolutely NON FRIENDLY and unhelpful.
There were two other people there with the exact same problem.
Eugene took the approach of telling us 'I doubt Samsung would do that. They would not make the MAC address change in their TV'.
So I posted to ask him, is he saying we are lying? Is he refusing to help us and to honour thew license we PAID him for?
Next day the thread was deleted and all traces of the subject have been deleted from the 'support forum'.
He also banned me and a couple of others from the site so we cannot talk any further of this!
AVOID THIS GUY AND HIS SOFTWARE!
If you have money to burn and no principles then yeah, give your money to this sod, otherwise, give the trial a go, then, when you get used to the program go to homemediaserver.ru and download the exact same program, only it is a russian and FREEWARE version, you can very easily navigate AND change the language in many parts if you are willing to open some config files in notepad and look around the programs install folder!
BE WARNED, this Eugene is a real con artist. He takes your cash and then doesn't care what happens.
Why should he get away with this? Hiding behind the internet is low. If I bought it from his shop I would be able to go back in there and get him to listen...but he can just ban you from his forum and ignore you even if you paid him and his software no longer works...unless you buy it again!
Next TV update? buy it again
Another TV update?
Buy it again....
And so on...
PS. It is NOT a language barrier that stops Eugene being friendly, he is VERY capable of English, I see it on his site. He CHOOSEs to be a moron.
Gimmeareason - November 21, 2011 - 1/5 stars - I knocked off two stars due to the license. Even though I was very impressed with the quality of the video of the vobs, I will not support the product with such a restricted license and the limitations of communicating with the developer.
However, that said, my best to the developer and his product.
sunx - November 07, 2010 - 3/5 stars - Documentation and or support is not good. Language barrier I suppose. Licensing model is a HUGE turnoff for a lot of folks, including myself. The license is charged per DLNA (mac address basically) device connected.
If you have any negative thing to say about the software, licensing, then Eugene deletes it from his forum.
If someone is that unscrupilous to do that, I don't want to be buying software from them.
agree with what is said - September 03, 2010 - 1/5 stars - price is hardly ever 40$! YOu need to pay licence for every connection method per device. So if you connect with laptop over wifi and lan and you also have TV, altogether you need to buy 3 licences.
If your hardware player like WDTV live breaks down, you'll need another licence as new player will have different device ID. Same for sold devices... you cannot transfer licence, you'll have to buy a new one.
One of the worse licensing model's I'v seen. Very greedy and inflexible. Any commenting on this on forum ends up by deleted posts by author. Shame on authors.
psiho - June 11, 2010 - 1/5 stars - It's a nice piece of software and functionality wise it's very good compared to others I have tested. However, for the purchase price of $40, it's a bit iffy. The software is far from polished in terms of UI, usability and plain English. You'll encounter some tooltips in Russian. Support is through Eugene, who clearly has difficulty speaking/writing/understanding the language. There is a forum for which people can ask questions, but many times Eugene can't understand what is written, or worse yet, provides a response which isn't all the clear because of the language barrier. Additionally, if you post something that Eugene doesn't agree with, your post will get deleted with no mention why.
Be careful of the licensing model. Some TVs, like my Sony KDL-46NX700 have 2 network adapters (wired and wireless). These equate to 2 different device IDs, and you will need separate licenses for each, not 1. I'm not sure if I agree with that, but that's how it is. Make sure you decide on which network connection you want to use prior to purchasing the software if you have a device that supports 2 different network connections. In an ideal world, how one chooses to connect their device to the network shouldn't matter, but the Russian philosophy must be different.
The program has great features - not much comes close to it. However, the UI is poor and usability is lacking because of the language issue. Very little documentation comes along with it, and so you may not know what many of the options do. You can try posting a question on the forum about it and you might get a response that makes sense. If Eugene thinks it's a stupid question, he'll just delete it though. Support and customer service is a 0.
